Counterpoise

2012
Hand carved Vermont Mountain White marble
12 feet high by 21.75 feet wide by 4 inches deep

Counterpoise is composed of two images hand carved in marble: cascading drapery alongside a pattern of radiating waves. The visual overlay of a grid created by the shadow lines between the stone panels fragments the imagery so that one becomes aware of a relationship of parts within a whole. The composition is somewhat abstracted by the grid, moving it away from a literal reading of cloth sections to a sense of flowing motion that continues beyond the confines of the wall's perimeter. In this manner, the carved marble wall projects an overall sense of majesty and calm into the building's public lobby.
